Central Government Jobs:

The key features of Central Government jobs are

These are some of the unique features of a Government job. The Central Government jobs can be further categorized into;

1. Administrative & Engineering Services:

UPSC conducts exams for the Administrative Services as well as Engineering Services. Engineering Services are exclusively for Engineers and it is named as “Indian Engineering Services – IES”. Whereas anyone with a graduation degree (Including Mechanical Engineers) can apply for Administrative services, and the successful candidates are given opportunities to work for the following services;

  • Indian Administrative Services – IAS,
  • Indian Foreign Services – IFS,
  • Indian Police Services-IPS,
  • Indian Revenue Services-IRS etc.

These are the topmost and very reputed exams in India. For all administrative services, the selection is done through a separate Exam (in three-phase i.e. 1. Preliminary Exam, 2. Mains Exams 3. Interview). Similarly, for Indian Engineering Services – IES a separate exam is conducted in a similar fashion.

The selected candidates from IES exams are given a very good post with lots of allowances and many facilities.

2. Public Sector Undertakings (PSU):

The Maharatna companies are the largest Government companies, hence they give higher pay, and benefits then comes the Navratna companies and finally the Miniratna Companies. Most of these companies hire directly through Gate scorecard or conducts recruitment exams or interviews. In addition to the PSU, Mechanical Engineers can work for some of the premier research organisations of India, which comes directly under the Central government like;

  1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)
  2. Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO)
  3. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)

3. Defense:

After the administrative/Engineering Services and PSU the third category, i.e. defense is also one of the most popular categories among Engineers. These jobs are unique in nature and give your life a new dimension. The popular jobs under the defense category (Especially for Engineers) are;

Military Engineering Services (MES): These jobs are specialized jobs and require only Engineers to fill the post, which comes under this service.

Combined Defence Services (CDS): Any graduate including mechanical Engineers can take this exam. The successful candidates are given officers post in the Army, Military, Navy, and Air force.

4. Indian Railways:

Indian Railways fill their vacancies by various modes. One of them is conducting direct exams through Railway Recruitment Board (RRB).

RRB publishes their requirements on their websites and through employment news and offer a very good package for Engineers.

5. Staff Selection Commission (SSC):

SSC conducts many exams for the recruitment of staff in various ministries and departments, which comes under the Central Government. One of the most important posts for Engineers is Junior Engineer (JE), which is often filled by SSC.

6. Banking Sector:

If you want to make a career in a non-technical line, then you can focus on bank exams too. The Government Banks Especially PSU’s offer a very handsome salary and attractive allowances.

You can plan for probationary officers (PO) exams. Probationary officers (PO) are promoted as managers very quickly. Most of the highest posts in banks are often assigned to experienced probationary officers.
