1. ‘2-DG’ AN  INDIGENOUS THERAPEUTIC MEDICINE DEVELOPED BY DRDO:

On 17 May 2021, 2-DG (2-deoxy-D-glucose)’ was released by Union Minister of Defence Rajnath Singh for Anti-COVID-19 therapeutic drug ‘2-DG (2-deoxy-D-glucose)’ developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is the first indigenous therapeutic drug developed by India to fight COVID-19.

It has been developed with the common efforts of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences(INMAS). DRDO in collaboration with Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL), Hyderabad, Telangana.

2. THE FIRST CONSIGNMENT OF SHAHI LITCHI FROM BIHAR WAS EXPORTED TO UNITED KINGDOM:

Shahi Litchi from Bihar

The first consignment of Shahi Litchi from Bihar was exported to the United Kingdom by air route on 24 May 2020. It is a GI certificate product Shahi Litchi from Bihar.

Muzaffarpur Litchi Growers Association holds registration for Shahi Litchi.

 

3. Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy Becomes First Indian medical Doctor To Win Rudolf Schindler Award:

 

Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy

 

Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy, First Indian medical Doctor Won the Rudolf V. Schindler Award from The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). He is the chairman of AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad.

He has promoted endoscopy in India and guided numerous endoscopists all over the world.

4. NATIONAL AWARD 2021 FROM TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT BOARD (TDB) FOR  CONVERSION OF CO2 TO CHEMICALS AND FUELS:

 

NATIONAL AWARD 2021 FROM TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT BOARD (TDB) FOR  CONVERSION OF CO2 TO CHEMICALS AND FUELS:

 

A Bangalore-based startup has received the National Award 2021 from the Technology Development Board (TDB) for developing a commercial solution for the conversion of CO2to chemicals and fuels.

The research was carried out by Prof. Sebastian C Peter, co-founder, and director of Breathe Applied Sciences which was started from the generous funding from DST Nano Mission. and his group from the New Chemistry Unit at JNCASR.

This startup signed an agreement with JNCASR, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology for the transfer of technology based on lab-scale research on reducing CO2to methanol and other useful chemicals and fuels.

 

5. INDIA’S 1ST WOMAN FLIGHT TEST ENGINEER:

Squadron Leader Aashritha V Olety is the first and only woman in the IAF qualified for the flight test engineer, she will be responsible for evaluating aircraft and airborne systems before their induction into the armed forces.

Olety, a native of Karnataka, has graduated as part of the 43rd Flight Test Course after completing a one-year course at the pilot school.

 

6. POOJA RANI BEAT MAVLUDA MOVLONOVA IN THE WOMEN’S 75KG FINAL TO WIN THE GOLD:

Pugilist Pooja Rani repeated her gold-medal winning performance at the Asian Elite Boxing Championships as she beat Mavluda Movlonova in the women’s 75kg final in Dubai.

Pooja won her maiden Asian boxing gold in 2019 in the 81kg event but was unable to repeat that last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. She had also bagged the bronze in 2015 and silver in 2012 at the Asian Boxing Championships in the middleweight category.

 

7. CISF DG SUBODH JAISWAL APPOINTED AS THE NEW CBI DIRECTOR:

 

A 1985 batch IPS officer Subodh Jaiswal serving as CISF DG, was appointed as the new CBI Director. He was chosen from a shortlist of three officers. The 1985-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour before he took charge as the 28th chief of the force at the CISF headquarters.

He is an IPS from the Maharashtra police special investigation team (SIT) and the state reserve police force.

9. INDIAN ECONOMIST AMARTYA SEN WON SPAIN’S PRINCESS OF ASTURIAS AWARD 2021 FOR SOCIAL SCIENCE:

Nobel Laureate & Indian economist Amartya Sen has been conferred with Spain’s top Princess of Asturias Award 2021 in the social sciences category.

AMARTYA SEN 87, was selected out of the 41 candidatures from 20 nationalities put forward for the Social Sciences Award, the Princess of Asturias Foundation.

The award comprises a Joan Miro sculpture representing and symbolizing the Award, a diploma, an insignia, and a cash prize of 50,000 Euros.

 

10. ‘SEHAT OPD’: RAJNATH SINGH LAUNCHES A SPECIAL PORTAL FOR ARMED FORCES PERSONNEL:

The Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has launched SeHAT-OPD Portal. It is an online medical consultation service for the armed forces personnel and ex-servicemen to ensure hassle-free health services for them.

SeHAT-OPD, the online outpatient platform Portal ensures widespread access to quality health services in remote areas & reducing the load on the hospitals.

The launch of this portal is a significant step towards the health of service personnel in this crucial COVID-19 scenario.

 

11. SAMVEDNA – A TOLL-FREE HELPLINE TO PROVIDE PSYCHO-SOCIAL MENTAL SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN:

National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) is providing Tele-Counselling to children through SAMVEDNA (Sensitizing Action on Mental Health Vulnerability through Emotional Development and Necessary Acceptance) – a Toll-Free Helpline launched to provide psycho-social mental support for Children affected during COVID 19 Pandemic.

Tele-counselling is being provided through a network of qualified Experts/Counselors/Psychologists trained under the guidance of Dr. Shekhar Seshadri, Professor, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and his team from NIMHANS, on various psychosocial issues in reference to COVID-19, using different Tele counseling strategies.

SAMVEDNA tele counseling service is for psychological support to children to address their stress, anxiety, fear, and other issues during the Pandemic.  This service is available on a tollfree No: 1800-121-2830 from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.  This service is exclusively for children who are willing to talk and are in need of counseling.

A Chandigarh-based startup has developed World’s 1st Private Digital Court Justice Justice Technologies’ (controlled by Blockchain & Artificial Intelligence) to resolve disputes under the Private Justice System through Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms (ADR).

 

15. MOTA SIGNS MOU WITH MICROSOFT FOR DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF TRIBAL SCHOOLS:

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) virtually signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft for the Digital transformation of Tribal schools for the virtual event ‘Empowering Youth For Success’ in 2021.

16. SNOW LEOPARD HABITAT:

As per the report ‘Over 100 Years of Snow Leopard Research’ released by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This title rang snow leopard was released on 17 May 2021. More than panther 70% of the habitat of the snow (Panthera uncia). Just 23% of snow panther’s 1.7 million sq km natural surroundings have been explored.

Each country covered by Snow Leopard research was highest in Nepal (74%), India (40%), Uzbekistan (39%), and China and Russia (25%).

According to the data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry  based on monthly WPI (Wholesale Price Index) on May 17, 2021, India’s annual rate of inflation (YoY), speed up to 10.49 percent in April 2021 (highest since April 2010) due to a hike in prices of food items, fuel,  power, and manufactured goods.

 

18. INDIAN FIRST  WOMEN MOUNTAINEERS TO SUMMIT MOUNT PUMORI:

The First Indian Women Mountaineers to Summit Mount Pumori is named to Baljeet Kaur of Solan district of Himachal Pradesh and Gunbala Sharma of Rajasthan. Everest Massif is formed by four peaks- Mount Pumori (7,161m), Mount Nuptse (7,862 m), Mount Lhotse (8,516m), and Mount Everest (8,848.86m).

The first Indian women Baljeet Kaur and Gunbala Sharma are the ones to scale a mountain that is a part of the Everest Massif in Nepal.

On 10 May 2021, two Indian male mountain climbers Hem Raj and Stanzin Norboo had climbed the same mountain, along with four sherpas.

Padma Shri awardee Dr.Krishan Kumar Aggarwal(KK Aggarwal) has died because of Covid-19 in New Delhi. He is a National President of the Indian Medical Association(IMA).

He was a renowned cardiologist and has been functioning as the Head of the Heart Care Foundation of India.

 

20. OXFORD UNIVERSITY STUDENT UNION PRESIDENT-ELECT ANVEE BHUTANI:

Anvee Bhutani, an Indian-origin Human Sciences student from Magdalen College at the University of Oxford has pledged to fight for students’ rights in her role as the new president-elect of the Oxford Student Union (SU).

Anvee Bhutani, a Punjabi by origin family who resides in Delhi has been elected in a by election.

 

21. VESAK DAY OR BUDDHA PURNIMA 2021 – MAY 26:

VESAK DAY OR BUDDHA PURNIMA 2021 – MAY 26:

Vesak Day also known as Buddha Purnima, the birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism is celebrated annually across the world on the full moon day of the Hindu Month Vaisakha. This is regarded as a “triple-blessed day” which marks the birth, enlightenment, and Maha Parnirvana of Buddha. The day is celebrated based on the Asian lunisolar calendar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the keynote address on the occasion of the Virtual Vesak Global Celebration on Buddha Purnima. The Prime Minister said Vesak is a day to celebrate the life of Lord Buddha and to reflect on the noble ideals and sacrifices he made for the betterment of our planet.

He added that he dedicated last year’s Vesak day program to all the front-line workers leading humanity’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
